Audubon Mural Tour of Washington Heights

Tour Highlights:

  • Visit a diverse array of murals created by both famous street artists, including Snoeman, Totem, as well as “legit” artists, including George Boorujy, for the Audubon Mural Project
  • Learn about the birds depicted in the murals from an experienced bird watcher
  • See John James Audubon’s resting place and Trinity Cemetery
  • View a dramatic and colorful mosaic created during the COVID pandemic

About this Tour:

Explore the vibrant streets of Washington Heights and discover the Audubon Mural Project, a public art initiative created by the National Audubon Society and Avi Gitler, former owner of the Gitler & __ art gallery. This walking tour highlights murals of North American bird species that are threatened by climate change, based on a major scientific report by Audubon.

You’ll see works by both professional and street artists on roll-down gates and building walls throughout the neighborhood. Along the way, learn about the birds, the artists, and the project’s environmental message, all while exploring a part of Manhattan few tourists visit. You’ll also see the former location of Gitler’s gallery as well as the final resting place of John James Audubon in beautiful Trinity Cemetery.
