The biggest battle in the American Revolution, and the first fought after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, happened right here in New York City, along a geological ridge that runs through Brooklyn.
In the early morning of August 27, 1776, British forces marched north from today's Bay Ridge and opened fire at a tavern loosely guarded by the American Patriots. It was from this first skirmish that the battle started.
On this tour, we'll follow troop movements through the hills of what is now The Green-Wood Cemetery and Prospect Park, learning about strategic battle tactics and dangerous oversights that led to a dramatic conflict. Along the way, we'll uncover monuments to the soldier's bravery hear of their daring escape.
We end the with a optional visit to the Old Stone House, where the Maryland 400 fought like wolves to stop the advancing British under the leadership of General William Alexander and Captain Mordecai Gist, allowing the American to live to fight another day!
