NYC’s oldest street, the Bowery, was a Native American footpath, Dutch farm road, and the city’s first entertainment district. It has seminal links to tap dance, vaudeville, Yiddish theater, Stephen Foster, Irving Berlin, baseball, modern tattooing, Harry Houdini, and Mae West. The stomping ground for sailors, shopgirls, gangs, gays, and the immigrant Irish, Italians, Chinese, Jews, and Germans, it later became America’s iconic skid row, but rebounded in the late 20th century, impacting the emergence of Abstract Expressionism, free jazz, and punk rock.

Tour guide David Mulkins is the author of The Bowery, a just-released pictorial history. He taught history and cinema studies at the High School of Art and Design for 25 years, and is also the president of the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors. He was the editor/contributing writer on a historic signage project and book, Windows on the Bowery: 400 Years on NYC’s Oldest Street.

But don’t worry! Sometimes spots open up closer to the event date if there are cancellations. We also repeat our most popular events when possible so you will have another opportunity to join us. There are also multiple other members-only events weekly that you can join in!
If you cancel more than 24 hours ahead of the scheduled event, you will receive a 100% refund. Please be courteous to your fellow Insiders and let us know if you can no longer attend so we can offer your spot to another person.
