Daily What?! There Used to Be a Burger King on Governors Island

There are a lot of surprising facts about Governors Island. For example, most of the island (almost 60%) is made from landfill created out of the construction of the Lexington Avenue subway. But one fun fact, which itself is a remnant of Governors Island’s prior military history, is that there used to be a Burger King on the island. According to the Governors Island blog, this Burger King also sold beer during the Coast Guard era (1966-1996). A pitcher of beer was a cool $3.99, 32 ounces went for $2.10.

The building has been demolished but photographer Andrew Moore was commissioned by the Public Art Fund, the Municipal Art Society, and what is now the Trust for Governors Island to document the abandoned buildings from 2003 to 2004.  The Burger King was located in Building 785 which had a bowling alley attached:

Other buildings have been demolished, including Building 877 the largest non-historic building on the island, which was imploded in June, in preparation for the redevelopment of Governors Island.
