About this Walking Tour:

Step into the layered history of Hoboken on this two-hour guided walking tour from the waterfront to City Hall. We begin inside the iconic Lackawanna Waiting Room at Hoboken Terminal and trace the city’s evolution from industrial powerhouse and immigration gateway to cultural touchstone and entrepreneurial hub.

Along the way, you’ll explore Hoboken’s role in World War I, stand near the birthplace of organized baseball, learn about the Stevens family’s engineering “firsts,” and uncover stories of longshoremen, artists, small business owners, and innovators who shaped the city. This co-led experience blends deep historical context with a look at how Hoboken’s past continues to influence its vibrant present.

About Your Guide:

Robert Foster has been a cornerstone of the Hoboken Historical Museum since its founding in 1986 and has served as its Executive Director for nearly 30 years. A passionate advocate for local history and the arts, Robert has dedicated his career to preserving, interpreting, and sharing Hoboken’s layered story — from its industrial roots and immigration legacy to its vibrant creative community.

Under his leadership, the Museum has grown into a dynamic cultural institution, expanding exhibitions, educational programming, public events, and community partnerships. Robert is especially known for his deep institutional knowledge and ability to connect archival history with the streets, buildings, and neighborhoods that still shape Hoboken today.
