This historic beacon, officially named the Jeffrey’s Hook Lighthouse, in Fort Washington Park rarely opens its doors. The lighthouse’s nickname comes from the children’s book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge, written by Hildegarde Swift and Lynd Ward in 1942.
On this special tour, led by an Urban Park Ranger, you will learn the history of this unique landmark as you climb up the original 48 cast-iron plate steps to the top of the tower. You will also learn about the natural and human history of the surrounding area, including Fort Washington Park, The George Washington Bridge and the Hudson River as you walk down to the lighthouse from Washington Heights.

In-person Insider tours may have limited capacity and are booked on a first come, first served basis.
But don’t worry! Sometimes spots open up closer to the event date if there are cancellations. We also repeat our most popular events when possible so you will have another opportunity to join us. There are also multiple other members-only events weekly that you can join in!
If you cancel more than 24 hours ahead of the scheduled event, you will receive a 100% refund. Please be courteous to your fellow Insiders and let us know if you can no longer attend so we can offer your spot to another person.
