Can you imagine New York City without street food? For centuries, immigrant street food entrepreneurs have shaped the city’s flavor and culture, one hot dog and halal plate at a time. Street Food City at the Museum of Food and Drink celebrates the city’s smallest food businesses, revealing the hidden world behind the iconic NYC food cart, the ways street food vendors and the foods they sell have shaped the city’s foodways, and the challenges faced by street food entrepreneurs from the past to today.

MOFAD Curatorial Director Catherine Piccoli gathers guests for this special after-hours event! Piccoli will give a talk about the making of this extremely timely exhibit and the street food entrepreneurs at its heart, with surprising revelations about New York City street vending history. Guests will also have the opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A.

About Your Guide:

Catherine Piccoli is a historian, writer, and curator whose work focuses on the intersection of food, culture, memory, and place. She brings a multidisciplinary approach to the Museum of Food and Drink as curatorial director, where she oversees the creation of exhibitions and robust public programming for adults and children. Catherine led the development of MOFAD’s major exhibitions – Street Food City, Flavor: The World to Your Brain, African/American: Making the Nation’s Table, and Chow: Making the Chinese American Restaurant – and gallery shows. She has been part of the MOFAD team since October 2014 and served as the museum’s interim president in 2020.

Previously, Catherine worked as a researcher at the Chicago History Museum and the Heinz History Center. She holds an M.A. in Food Studies from Chatham University and a B.S. with honors in Social and Cultural History from Carnegie Mellon University.
