In 1898, author and poet Charles De Kay, the literary and art critic for The New York Times, sought to establish a hub for the arts in New York City. He, along with a group of New York's preeminent artists and patrons, among them such luminaries as Louis Comfort Tiffany and Charles Rollison Lamb, conceived of the National Arts Club as a gathering place to welcome artists and art-lovers across all artistic disciplines. Go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic Samuel Tilden Mansion which became the Club's home in 1906 .
Over the years, membership grew to include countless distinguished artists, including painters Robert Henri, Frederic Remington, William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux; sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French, Anna Hyatt Huntington, and Paul Manship were all members as were composer Victor Herbert, conductor Walter Damrosch, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, and architects Stanford White and George B. Post.
The National Arts Club has been used for prominent film and television productions, including Age of Innocence, Kramer vs. Kramer, Amazon’s Etoile and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Showtime’s Billions, FX’s American Horror Stories, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, as well as Z - The Beginning of Everything, Revel in the Rye, Gotham, Ring Twice for Miranda, Law & Order SVU, History Channel, and CBS This Morning Interview. Our historic parlors have been featured in photo shoots and fashion shows, including Steven Klein photographing Kim Kardashian for Interview Magazine, New York Magazine, and Vanity Fair.
Robert Yahner, long-time curator/registrar of the National Arts Club, was previously the studio curator for American master Will Barnet and has worked with many artists and galleries.
