As the anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire approaches, this week is full of events relating to Women’s History Month and commemorating the tragic fire that started a fierce movement for worker’s rights. Friday, March 22nd
Enjoy a celebratory Mexican dinner at the Brooklyn Museum with Chefs’ Talk & Taste: A Celebration of Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving Through Conversation, Food & Drink. The evening will consist of a discussion with Chef Sue Torres, Justin Bazdarich, executive chef of Michelin-starred Oxomoco; Ronny Jaramillo, co-owner of Chela; and Andy Mejias, chef de cuisine of The Norm. The chefs will discuss their commitment to bringing traditional Mexican cuisine to an American audience, how Mexican food and culture have become ingrained in New York City, and their deep personal and professional roots in the community. A family style Mexican dinner of albóndigas, flautas de camarones, and gorditas de plátano dulce will be served with a complimentary traditional Oaxacan toast with Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal.
Saturday, March 23rd
Explore the immigration history of Ellis Island from a different perspective on a special behind-the-scenes hard hat tour of the abandoned hospital complex on the south side of the island. Inside, gain access to areas that have been off-limits to the public for over sixty years and see pieces of the site specific art installation Unframed by world renowned artist JR.

Meet the Ghostly Women of Greenwich Village on a special Women’s History Month walking tour presented by Boroughs of the Dead. Discover the stories of Gertrude Tredwell, the women of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, Edith Wharton, Rose Butler, Jan Bryant Bartell, Theodosia Burr, and more haunting histories of the neighborhood’s most iconic female ghosts. This tour will discuss the prevalence and significance of women in ghost stories as well as offer some chilling and fascinating true life tales. We’ll be giving away two tickets to Untapped Cities Insiders on the Facebook page at noon!
Support musical communities around the world at the Come Together Music Festival and Label Market presented by MoMA PS1 and Other Music record shop. The festival will features live performances, films, workshops, and panels that “celebrate the interactive ecosystem of local and international music communities, and a label market featuring more than 75 record labels” during the two-day event.
Sunday, March 24th
Discover the epic origin story of the Brooklyn Bridge, one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, on Untapped Cities’ Secrets of the Brooklyn Bridge Walking Tour. Learn about the supposedly cursed family responsible for building the bridge, cross the span for amazing views, and uncover secrets stories of the hidden Cold War fall out shelter and champagne vaults.

Spend an afternoon stuffing your face with chocolate at the Brooklyn Chocolate Takedown 2019. From 2:00pm until 4:00pm guests can sample chocolate from all of those competing for the prize being crowned New York City’s best homemade chocolate maker. If you want to enter your own recipe into the contest, you can email the organizer to reserve a station. Tickets are required to attend and sample.
Monday, March 25th
On the anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, learn about activist women who fought for safety and equality in the workplace at the New York Historical Society’s Back in Class-Women You Wish You’d Heard About: Labor Rights and Activism. As part of the museum’s Back in Class series, the session will be led by a museum educator and explore ho women helped protect workers in a changing America through strikes, unionization, and lawsuits. The program also includes a visit to the Ladies’ Garments, Women’s Work, Women’s Activism exhibit and the chance to make your own buttons for equality.

Remember the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire at an art exhibit inside the Roosevelt House. Remembering the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: Art as Activism,will feature various forms of art and artist such as poetry from Bracha Nechama Bomze, fiber arts for Pamela Koehler and photography by Taslima Akhter along with much more. All of the artist use their art to keep the memory of the fire alive and raise consciousness about workers’ rights, and engaging people in the struggle for social justice. The event is part of the PhenomenalWomen@RH Series. The event is free but requires advanced registration.
Thursday, March 28th
Dive deep into the art of Nari Ward at the New Museum with a gallery talk by art historian Abbe Schriber. As part of the museum’s Outside the Box Gallery Talks series, Schriber will give a presentation centered around the exhibit Nari Ward: We the People in which he will speak about the exhibition or themes emergent in Ward’s works and his distinct relationship to the artist and works on view.
