Untapped New York is thrilled to serve as a media sponsor for Archtober, New York City's month-long festival of architecture and design. Throughout the whole month of October, over one hundred cultural institutions across the five boroughs, and the tri-state area, will offer talks, tours, and programs that explore various facets of the city's urban fabric.

Each year the festival selects a theme and for 2026 it is In Our Hands. This idea invites participants to embrace community and optimism in the face of myriad challenges including climate change, rapidly evolving artificial intelligence, and divisive policies. The festival's programming highlights a collective desire for sensorial, inclusive design, handcrafted practices, and resilient structures, reminding us that as architects, designers, and citizens, the future, after all, is In Our Hands.

Every event is categorized into one of five topics: Nature, Media, Culture, History, and Education. To kick off the month of events, the Center for Architecture will introduce three exhibitions on October 1st: Humanist Modernity, Why Design?, and Dark Matter U: Justice, Pedagogy, Design.

Returning festival events include Building of the Day tours, the Pumpkitecture live pumpkin carving competition, and the Arthur M. Rosenblatt Memorial Lecture on Museum Design. Untapped New York members can grab a free ticket to the Pumpkitecture event and lecture! (Registration coming soon).

Throughout the month you can also explore the city's architecture and design through experiences like a narrated boat tour, a zine-making workshop that celebrates trees, opening night of the Architecture & Design Film Festival, or a walking tour of historic hotels. This year the festival extends beyond the city with a chance to explore Storm King Art Center, take a hard hat tour of a major adaptive reuse project in Newburgh, or join a hands-on historic preservation workshop with Hudson Valley House Parts.
