MONDAY, AUGUST 13: The New Inquiry Magazine is launching Issue 7: Cops. Join us at Spectacle for a night of vintage and contemporary cop films: A legendary Charlie Chaplin/Keystone Kops film, A Thief Catcher, rediscovered only two years ago at a Michigan garage sale; Easy Street, far and away the best anarchic cop film; and Protect and Serve, a truly odd compilation of police training videos. TUESDAY, AUGUST 14: On Skate Graphics from Concept to Completion. Skateboard industry veteran Mark Nardelli will show his work and discussing his creative process in his role as the Co-founder and Senior Creative Director at 5Boro. This will be an informative event for anyone interested in learning more about how skateboard graphics are conceived, produced and marketed. 7:30-9:30pm at 3rd Ward, 195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn. $15 for members, $20 for non-members.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15: New York Diaries, 1609-2009: A Book Talk with Teresa Carpenter
At the South Street Seaport Museum. Four centuries of journal entries, arranged day by day throughout a calendar year, offer a vivid and varied snapshot of life in New York City as it has been lived since Henry Hudson first sailed into New York’s Upper Bay. Join editor Teresa Carpenter, a Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist and New York historian, for a reading from her mesmerizing book and a discussion of the diverse lives of New Yorkers, including everyone from Henry Hudson to Edgar Allan Poe to Joyce Carol Oates. THURSDAY, AUGUST 16: DVD Dead Drop at Museum of the Moving Image. For this new commissioned work, artist Aram Bartholl (Berlin, b. 1972) will embed an inconspicuous, slot-loading DVD burner into the side of the Museum, available to the public 24 hours a day. Visitors who find the Dead Drop and insert a blank DVD-R will receive a digital art exhibition, a collection of media, or other featured content curated on a monthly cycle by Bartholl or selected artists. DVD Dead Drop imbues the act of data transfer with a tangibility left behind in a world of cloud computing and appstores, using a medium””the digital versatile disc””that is quickly becoming another artifact of the past. FRIDAY, AUGUST 17: Creative Time is heading to Far Rockaway to host its inaugural artist sandcastle competition at 3pm on Friday August 17th! Local food vendors, prizes by esteemed judges, and a party on the boardwalk starting at 6pm with music by DJ iDEATH. RSVP on Facebook. FREE.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18: After the Final Curtain Talk with Atlas Obscura. Join photographer, Matt Lambros, for an illustrated lecture about the death of the country’s greatest and grandest movie theaters. 7:30pm-9:30pm at Observatory, 543 Union Street (at Nevins), Brooklyn.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 19: Magic Trick, a production of Caps Lock Theater. Bana: Beautiful, paraplegic, missing. Eric: her (ex?) boyfriend, looking for her. Clara: That burlesque dancer they almost took home. Bana’s donning pasties, Eric’s losing his sh*t, and Clara gets naked and won’t leave. A love story with burlesque.
