Daily What!? A Trip to the Moon in the West Village

Hugo,  Martin Scorsese’s film adapted from Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret,  reminded me of my favorite gate in Manhattan. Located on Twenty-First Street, between  Eighth  and Ninth Avenues, Georges Melies’ masterpiece comes to life.

Georges Melies’ 1902  A Trip to the Moon  (Le Voyage Dans la Lune), is considered to be a treasure of early cinema. The film, which Melies wrote and directed, is about a group of astronauts who become the first humans to visit the moon. As their spacecraft approaches the moon, the man in the moon watches helplessly as it crashes into his eye. This scene has been perfectly captured on Twenty-First Street.
