Publishing to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the release of Carole King’s iconic album Tapestry, Loren Glass’ new book by the same name explores how the album embodies second-wave feminism and serves as an expression of the freedom and independence that women of King’s generation sought as the turbulent sixties came to a close. This talk will align King’s own development from girl to woman, with the larger shift in the music industry from teen-oriented singles by girl groups to albums by adult-oriented singer-songwriters. The book explores that shift as a watershed moment in musical and cultural history, a time when female musicians challenged the male dominance of the music and entertainment industries. In our upcoming virtual talk, Glass will also explore King’s ties to New York City, the city where she was born and where she wrote her biggest hits!
