Grand Central Madison Wins Award for World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Station
See why NYC's newest train station took home a top design prize!
For visitors and New York City locals alike, coming up with a concise list of the best activities and places to go might be a monumental task. From the dozens of things to do in Central Park to New York’s popular and obscure museums to almost 30,000 restaurants, it may seem like there are endless places to try in the most populous city in the U.S. But what if you had to choose just 30 of the best experiences in the bustling city, capturing the best and most diverse parts of the five boroughs?
On February 10th at 2 p.m., join author Tarajia Morrell to discuss her new book Soul of New York: A Guide to 30 Exceptional Experiences. Morrell will discuss the absurd challenge of trying to distill New York City into 30 experiences and how she coopted the “rules” of the Soul Of series; the unique combination of charm and frustration that the city serves up every single minute and how that affects us as New Yorkers; how the food available in New York is one of the best ways to soothe the stress of city life; the simultaneously ephemeral and impermanent nature of the city, the juxtaposition of its history and its obsession with the new; and the city as a stage set for daily life. For the book, Morrell and the team tested 15,000 places and included only the 30 best. These include eating an “underground” burger, chowing down at Sylvia’s in Harlem, indulging in New York City’s best pizza slices, and sleeping in the city’s tiniest hotel room. The book serves as a guide “for those who want to unlock the hidden doors of a city, feel out its heartbeat, plumb every last nook and cranny to uncover its soul.”
According to the book’s description, “The Lilliputian hotel room, once slept in by sailors, now perfect for the solo traveler; the cinema that restores Golden Age glamor to the movie-going experience; the modern pharmacist who will cure your cold (or hangover) with a tonic; the spot to sip a Manhattan while gazing at pictures by Warhol and Basquiat; the market that offers a true slice of the Lower East Side; the high-end burger and the hidden one; the pizza place that created a neighborhood; the surf town a subway away.”
