Winter may theoretically be coming to a close but it isn’t spring just yet, and we still have a couple more days of the biting wind. We think the best way to savor these last few days of chilliness is with a warm pie— sweet or savory (or both!). Check out these five locations for outstanding pie, and get ready to treat yourself on the upcoming Pi Day!
Four & Twenty Blackbirds has been serving up dessert pies, every day of the week, since 2010. Raised in rural South Dakota, two sisters with an eclectic range of interests settled down in Gowanus, Brooklyn to make pies with local and organic ingredients. They obtain milk and fruit from upstate New York, from Battenkill Valley Creamery and Wilklow Orchards, respectively. The local ingredients are not just for convenience; the pies at Four & Twenty Blackbirds are evidently fresh, raw, and natural— which makes for an undeniably delicious product. In their pursuit of local ingredients, the pie menu changes frequently depending on what fruits are in season. You can purchase a slice for about $5.00, or you can snag a whole pie from this counter service cafe; they also supply pies for weddings!
Nestled into a small brick wall in Hell’s Kitchen, Little Pie Company can be spotted by a simple green awning and a mouth-watering window display of desserts. The bakery has been established since 1985 and offers pies of three different sizes: 5 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch. They refrain from using anything artificial or chemical in their desserts and, instead, boast a commitment to pure, fresh ingredients. The store is open every day of the week, however, in case you can’t make it in, they also ship to any location in the US (though beware of the overnight shipping fee)!
Upon entering Pie Corps in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, you are faced with a large chalkboard menu of products to satisfy your pie-needs; the selection ranges from sweet pies to breakfast hand pies to savory pot pies. The shop menu not only changes seasonally, but also daily, so you might want to call ahead and make sure they have your favorite on a given day. If you give them 24 hours notice, they’ll be sure to make it for you! Pie Corps also offers many classes in pie-making, such as a “Pie Crust Intensive.” They cater all kinds of events, all the while proclaiming a clever motto: “We are pie-oneers!”
Butter & Scotch closed their original Brooklyn retail location during the pandemic, but they now sell their pies out of a new luncheonette at 53 Rockaway Ave in Ocean Hill. Some of their delicious recipes can be found in their cookbook, Butter & Scotch: Recipes from Brooklyn’s Favorite Bar and Bakery. You can visit in person or order online for delivery in Manhattan and Brooklyn and have a yummy smores, peanut butter and jelly, or chocolate lavender pie delivered to your door!
