This now-famous glass Watertower by Tom Fruin will only be on the rooftop of 20 Jay Street at Brooklyn Bridge Park until June this year, and you can get up close and personal with a replica in Brooklyn Bridge Park this weekend. Those who can’t get to New York City can have a look through this Live Cam.
This watertower is the fourth installation of artist Tom Fruin’s Icon series, Watertower. The series celebrates scavenged and recyclable materials in sculptural form. In keeping with this theme, Watertower is a mosaic of colored salvaged plexiglass and a steel frame. It is mounted on a water tower platform and illuminated at night by light sequences designed by Ryan Holsopple so that it glitters like a stained glass beacon on the Brooklyn skyline. The press release on Fruin’s website says, “this beacon of light is a tribute to the iconic New York water tower and a symbol of the vibrancy of Brooklyn.”
Brooklyn-based Fruin has also contributed to the collections in several international museums, like the Hanck Collection at the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, Germany, the Richard J. Massey Foundation of Arts and Sciences in the city, and the Buenos Aires Design Center. He has another outdoor sculpture called HOTEL on the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
