Earlier this year, we shared a fun map we made of the city’s honorary street names, all 1600+ of them. Yesterday, a new one was temporarily added to the list – Muhammad Ali Way. The NYC Mayor’s Office released a set of photographs showing the installation of the street sign on 33rd Street, in front of a digital billboard honoring Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden, by the Department of Transportation.

“Ali never backed down from a fight in or outside the ring,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. One of Ali’s daughters, Laila Ali, wrote on Instagram of the occasion, “Such and honor for the G.O.A.T. [Greatest Of All Time].” The sign will only be up temporarily – any permanent honorific street names must be approved through a legislative process.
