Why Pinball Was Illegal in NYC For 34 Years
Pinball was banned in New York City from 1942 to 1976 after a crusade by Mayor LaGuardia saw thousands of machines confiscated and destroyed.
Adding to our growing list of NYC spots that only sell one thing, we love this latest addition to the LES bakery/pastry scene, Les Jardins de la Duchesse on the Lower East side that focuses on the éclair. They opened last Monday, the 1st of December, and so far have 6 unique flavors of sweet éclairs and 4 kinds of savory.
Owned and baked by a duo of French men, these pastries are the real deal. The inside flaunts contemporary design and has a clean feel to it, easily fitting in with the fun and hip neighborhood surrounding Les Jardins de la Duchesse.

They’re boasting high quality and fresh ingredients–and doing a great job of making our mouths water even on their website. Their creative savory éclairs include Mozzarella & Tomato, Bacon-Wrapped Goat Cheese, Chicken Curry, and Salmon & Wasabi. Their sweet products aren’t all that traditional either, including éclairs with Chocolate, Vanilla, and Coffee but also Salted Butter Caramel, Lemon Yuzu & Ginger, and Pistachio & Raspberry éclairs.
