About this Tour:

Most New Yorkers don't know their city was a battleground from August to November 1776 — from Gravesend in Brooklyn to Pelham in the Bronx. The Battle of Harlem Heights was a turning point.

On September 16th, 1776, after two crushing defeats, Washington's forces surprised British troops...and won. On this mile-and-a-half walk through Morningside and Hamilton Heights, you'll walk the ground where it happened and see first hand how the hills you're climbing gave Patriot soldiers a strategic advantage.

Itinerary

Meet Your Guide

Meet your group at Convent Avenue at 141st Street. Please arrive 10 minutes early.

Hamilton Grange

See the outside of Alexander Hamilton's historic final home.

St. Nicholas Terrace and 137th Street

Peer over the Harlem Plains from a vantage point Washington himself used during the action. After the chaos of the Kips Bay rout, Washington regrouped on the Heights. The next morning, Knowlton's Rangers made contact with British advance forces here—and set the battle in motion.

Amsterdam and 135th Street

Take in the topography and review the American forces' march down from Harlem Heights into the Hollow Way—today's 125th Street—and back up the ridge to Morningside Heights. Hear about the "fox-hunt bugle," the British taunt that infuriated Washington.

Broadway and 135th Street

Follow the footsteps of 1,000 American troops as they descended a steep incline and marched forward to meet the British. The terrain made this moment as much a test of nerve as tactics.

Broadway and 125th Street

Stand on the ground of the opening clash—where Knowlton's Rangers and Washington's feint converged in a sharp skirmish. This was the first engagement of the war in which Continental soldiers watched British regulars turn and run.

Grant's Tomb, Riverside Drive at 120th Street

The British used this high ground as their rest point after the initial morning fighting. Today it's one of upper Manhattan's most peaceful spots, a bucolic setting in the shadow of the largest mausoleum in North America, and a moment to absorb what's already unfolded on the walk.

120th Street and Claremont Avenue to Broadway

Walk the main battle site where, for roughly two hours, approximately 1,800 men on each side exchanged musket fire—until the Americans sent the British running for the second time that day.

Tour Ends: Broadway and 117th Street, Columbia University

View a commemorative plaque marking the battle and learn about the aftermath of Harlem Heights, a genuine turning point in American morale noted by Washington himself and later championed by Columbia historian James Shenton, who spent years arguing for the battle's rightful place in Revolutionary War history.
