Brooklyn has become one of New York City’s fastest modernizing boroughs, and this innovation in Sunset Park will help to continue that growth. TechShop Brooklyn will officially open for business on October 30.
TechShop Brooklyn is located at the renovated Brooklyn Army Terminal and is one of the NYC Economic Development Corporation’s (NYCEDC) three industrial parks to support the advanced manufacturing industry. “TechShop Brooklyn will help seed our advanced manufacturing ecosystem, creating affordable access to equipment so that entrepreneurs can grow their companies,” said NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett.

That’s the best part- this facility supports small businesses in the manufacturing industry by providing over $1 million worth of high-tech equipment needed to help these growing companies like 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics labs, machines, metalworking and wood shops, welding stations, a textiles department, and much more. TechShop Brooklyn will provide 100 free memberships to community members each year, and will even offer open-access educational opportunities to help bring along those interested in this growing sector with safety and basic-use training, artist workshops, advanced skill-building classes, and youth-focused STEAM education.
“Access to low cost and high-tech equipment will help small companies grow into bigger ones,” said City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

The 20,500 square-foot shared advanced manufacturing center is a joint venture by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito as part of their 21st Century Industrial Action Plan. The NYCEDC supported construction of the facility as part of their Futureworks NYC Initiative to pave the way for advanced modern manufacturing in the city.
The facility is expected to create up to 500 new jobs and support 200 companies within the first five years. “TechShop’s vast experience in safely and effectively managing world-renowned makerspaces will enable Futureworks NYC to fuel the birth of new products, companies and jobs and to deliver transformational experiences to the people and communities of Brooklyn,” said Dan Woods, TechShop’s CEO.

With the construction of such an innovative facility, there could be concerns about price increases in the neighborhood. But tenants won’t have to worry about that issue because the Brooklyn Army Terminal operates on a double-bottom-line that insures affordability. To do that, the city chooses companies that have high-growth potential to maximize NYC’s economic development.
The de Blasio Administration invested $115 million in the Brooklyn Army Terminal that would bring 500,00 square-feet of new industrial space to market next year.
